Interesting and moving letter from Rabbi Ezriel Hildesheimer of Berlin to Sir Moses Montefiore, written in English, appealing to him to come to the aid of the Jews of Ethiopia (then known as Abyssinia) who were suffering badly at the time.
Eisenstadt 1864.
Rabbi Ezriel Hildesheimer (1820-1899), disciple of Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger of Altona. Rabbi of Eisenstadt (1851), where he established a school and a rabbinical college. Appointed Rabbi of the orthodox community in Berlin in 1869, and established its Rabbinical Seminary as well as many welfare organisations and charitable activities, and was recognised as one of the leaders of German orthodox Jewry. Author of Chidushei Rabenu Ezriel, responsa, and other works.
