LETTER TO SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE, FROM LEADERS OF THE SIGHET JEWISH COMMUNITY EXPRESSING RECOGNITION OF HIS ACTIVITIES ON BEHALF OF WORLD JEWRY.
Letter dated 1864, written in response to the proposal of R. Eliezer Lipman Silberman of Lyck, editor of Hamaggid, to publish a book containing letters of appreciation and blessings to Sir Moses Montefiore from rabbis and communities around the Jewish world. In their letter, the leaders of the Sighet community support Rabbi Silberman’s idea and praise Sir Moses Montefiore for his activities to help Jews in Morocco and elsewhere.
The letter is signed by R. Yosef Yochanan Kahana (grandson of the author of Kuntres Hasefeikos), President of the Community of Maramaras – Sighet, and Chaim Dov Rochshein, secretary, and bears the stamp of the Sighet Jewish community.
Sir Moses and Lady Judith Montefiore, great British philanthropists who devoted their lives to improving the conditions of Jews around the world through their generosity and political intervention.
