MOUNTBATTEN & TOWNSEND
MOUNTBATTEN LOUIS: (1900-1979) British Admiral of World War II. An unusual original black ink drawing signed by Mountbatten, one page, slim 4to, n.p., n.d. Mountbatten has drawn a somewhat unskilful image of a large tree with heavy foliage, adding his signature ('Mountbatten of Burma, AF') immediately beneath. Together with Peter Townsend (1914-1995) British Flying Ace of World War II, participated in the Battle of Britain. An unusual original bold pencil drawing signed by Townsend, one page, slim 4to, n.p., n.d. Townsend has drawn a simple image of a Christmas tree with a number of baubles hanging from its rather bare branches, with Santa Claus ('Pere Noel') standing at the side of the tree and with a speech bubble containing the words 'Je m'appelle Noel, c'est mon arbre' (Translation: 'My name is Noel, this is my tree'). Signed by Townsend in bold pencil with his name alone at the head of the page. VG to EX, 2
Provenance: Both drawings originate from the album of the French radio journalist Pierre Lhoste (1913-1984) who contributed to Paris-Soir and, after completing interviews, asked the interviewee to draw and sign a sketch of a tree in his album.
