RABBI YITZCHAK ISAAC HAGER, REBBE OF ZABLOTOW. APPEAL FOR ASSISTANCE FROM THE EZRAS TORAH RELIEF ORGANISATION IN NEW YORK. 1939.

Letter sent from Antwerp, appealing for help, shortly before WWII.
‘I have been living here for six months having suffered greatly before arriving here ... we live on a small amount of bread and water and have no income other than the small grant received from the refugee committee, which is not enough even for bread and salt. The Yamim Noraim are soon upon us and the cost of providing for the Yomtov expenses is great. I am not in good health and am in bed all day unable to go out...’

Rabbi Yitzchak Isaac Hager (ca. 1870-1941), son of Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Zablotow, descendant of the Rebbes of Kossov and Sassov. After his marriage he lived in Berditchev, where he became renowned for the way his prayers and Tehillim were answered. Settled in Vienna during WWI and then escaped from the Nazis to Antwerp, where he passed away soon after the German invasion.
