A CONTEMPORARY INSIGHT INTO EARLY 19TH CENTURY JEWISH LIFE IN YERUSHALAYM - LETTER FROM THE CHACHAM BASHI RABBI CHAIM DAVID CHAZAN TO CHIEF RABBI NATHAN ADLER OF LONDON AND TO SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE.


This fascinating letter describes economic conditions of Yerushalayim’s residents in the early 19th century, showing their dependence on charitable donations of Jews around the world, and on the efforts of Sir Moses Montefiore to alleviate their poverty by the provision of windmills to grind flour. The Sephardi Chief Rabbi describes the shortage of wheat experienced that year and appeals to Sir Moses Montefiore to have the windmill repaired.

Rabbi Chaim David Chazan (1803-1869), born in Izmir and appointed its Chief Rabbi in 1840. Settled in Yerushalayim in 1855 and appointed Rosh Beth Din and later also Chacham Bashi (Chief Rabbi) and Rishon Letzion. He was active in promoting Jewish agricultural work in the Holy Land. Author of Toras Hazevach, Nedivei Lev and Yishrei Lev.

Rabbi Nathan Adler (1803-1890), son of Rabbi Mordechai Adler of Hanover and relative of the famous Rabbi Nathan Adler of Frankfurt. Rabbi of Hanover and London (1845) where he served as Chief Rabbi of England. Author of Nesina Leger.

Sir Moses Montefiore, great British philanthropist who devoted his life to improving the conditions of Jews around the world through his generosity and political intervention.
