Appeal Letter from Rebbetzin Sterna Sarah Schneersohn - Help for the Needy
Letter in Yiddish handwritten and signed by Rebbetzin Sterna Sarah Schneersohn, appeal on behalf of a poor family in Eretz Israel. Addressed to one of her sisters-in-law. Lubavitch (Lyubavichi), [turn of the 20th century]. In the letter, dated "Motzaei Shabbat 16th MarCheshvan", the Rebbetzin requests of one of her sisters-in-law (free translation from Yiddish): "My dearest sister-in-law, the Rebbetzin… to participate in this great deed, for the needy, our relative Sheina Slonim from the Holy Land, to fundraise on her behalf in the cities…". Rebbetzin Sterna Sarah - fifth Rebbetzin of the Chabad dynasty, wife of Rebbe Rashab and mother of Rebbe Rayatz. Born in 1859 to R. Yosef Yitzchak of Ovruch, son of the Tzemach Tzedek, and to his wife, daughter of R. Yaakov Yisrael of Cherkasy, son-in-law of the Mitteler Rebbe. In 1865, her betrothal to the Rashab was celebrated in the home of her illustrious grandfather the Tzemach Tzedek (the bride and groom were both five years old at the time). The couple were wed some ten years later, in 1875. In 1940, she escaped occupied Warsaw together with her only son Rebbe Rayatz to the United States, where she passed away in 1942. She was renowned for her righteousness and wisdom, and her son the Rayatz established the Beit Sarah network of girls' schools in her memory. The Slonim family of Hebron were descendants of Rebbetzin Menucha Rachel Slonim (Culi), daughter of the Mitteler Rebbe of Lubavitch. The family was very attached to their uncles-rebbes, the Rebbes of Lubavitch, and corresponded extensively with the Rebbes and their wives. [1] leaf (2 written pages). Approx. 21 cm. Good condition.
