[NELSON HORATIO]: (1758-1805) NELSON FRANCES: (1758-1831)
[NELSON HORATIO]: (1758-1805) British Admiral during the Napoleonic Wars, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805. NELSON FRANCES: (1758-1831) Viscountess Nelson, Duchess of Bronte, the wife of Admiral Horatio Nelson. A.L.S., Frances H. Nelson, one page, 4to, n.p., 15th December n.y., to a gentleman, evidently a banker. Nelson writes, in full, ´The Bearer Thomas Allen (is Lord Nelson´s servant whos money you bought into the fund just before his Lordship sailed for the Mediterranean) wishes to be told what the sum is - which I have really forgot´. A few very light, minor stains, largely to the edges of the letter, and a very thin strip of guard from previous mounting to the left edge, about VG
Thomas Allen (1764-1838) served as Nelson´s personal manservant at sea through the early great naval actions of the Napoleonic War and was present alongside the Admiral at the Battle of St. Vincent and Raid on Santa Cruz (both 1797), the Battle of the Nile (1798) and the Battle of Copenhagen (1801). During the long sojourn in the Mediterranean when Nelson and Lady Hamilton had their affair (1798-1800), Allen was their trusted messenger and when they set up home together at Merton, Allen served them for a short time as butler (1801-02).
