COLONNA MARCANTONIO: (1535-1584) Roman aristocrat who served as Viceroy of Siciliy in the service of the Spanish Crown and was also a General of the Spanish forces and Captain General of the Church. Colonna is best remembered for his part as the admiral of the Papal fleet in the Battle of Lepanto (1571) and has been described as 'one of the most illustrious land and sea captains of the 16th century'. A rare L.S., M[ar] cantonio Colonna, with holograph subscription, one page, 4to, Rome, 15th January 1572, to a prior at Sassoferrato, in Latin. Colonna writes just a few months after participating in victory at the Battle of Lepanto, at a time when he was charged with the reconstitution of the papal army, and requests his correspondent to provide his envoy with absolute confidence in choosing the infantry which are necessary for His Holiness's new army. With address panel and minor remnants of a red wax seal to the verso. The letter has at some stage suffered from damp staining, largely affecting the left half of the page (although the text remains reasonably legible) although only very slightly touching Colonna's signature. A few small holes and some small areas of paper loss and tears to the edges. FR
