LATTRE DE TASSIGNY JEAN JOSEPH DE: (1889-1952) French General during WWII and Indochina war. Former officer during World War One, he fought at Verdun and was wounded multiple times. He was the only French General to command American troops during WWII, and the representative at Berlin on 8 th May 1945, together with Eisenhower, Zhukov and Montgomery. Posthumously appointed Marshal of France. Rare A.L.S., J. de Lattre, two pages, 8vo, Paris, 7 th August 1951, on his printed letterhead paper "Le General de Lattre de Tassigny", [to Maurice Garçon], in French. De Lattre has found yesterday, on his return to home, a quite delicate letter from Pierre Benoit the writer, and sends to his correspondent a copy of the letter plus his response, stating in part `.. now that I am recovering, I take all this on friendship. You have just given to me a new proof of yours, and I do not know how to thank you for this..´ Folded. VG
