ROHAN CHARLES DE: (1715-1787) Prince of Soubise. French soldier and minister to King Louis XV and King Louis XVI. Marshal of France. L.S., Le M P. de Soubise, one page, 4to, Paris, 7th March 1780, to [Jacques] Le Brigant, in French. The Prince writes concerning the baronetcy of Avaugour, which his family had inherited in 1746, asking if Le Brigant has '….preuves solides pour etablir que mes ancetres et moy avons possede sans interruption et sans doute de males en males Avaugour et Goello depuis environ quatorze siecles' (Translation: '….solid evidence to establish that my ancestors and I have possessed without interruption and without doubt from male to male Avaugour and Goello for approximately fourteen centuries') and further making reference to a 'beau titre' of which Le Brigant would be the depository. Very slightly irregularly torn to the upper left edge, not affecting the text or signature, otherwise VG
Jacques Le Brigant (1720-1804) French lawyer and linguist. Known for his imagination (which brought him ridicule as well as respect) Le Brigant maintained that all the world's languages derived from Breton.
