CIALDINI ENRICO: (1811-1892) Italian soldier, politician and diplomat who defeated Giuseppe Garibaldi at the controversial Battle of Aspromonte in 1862. A.L.S., Henri Cialdini, to the recto and verso of the General's personal printed oblong 12mo Visting Card, featuring his printed name at the centre and with black mourning borders, n.p., n.d. ('Lundi 18'; annotated 1864 in a small unidentified hand), to a Countess, in French. Cialdini writes, in full, 'Je vous prie de remettre au porteur les cashemires que hier vous avez en la bonte de m'offrir pour etre examines et compares a ceux que nous avons recu de Paris' (Translation: 'Please hand over to the bearer the cashmeres that you kindly offered me yesterday to be examined and compared with those we received from Paris'). Neatly mounted at the left edge to a 4to page removed from an album to which are also neatly affixed an original 2 x 3.5 sepia albumen photograph of Cialdini seated in a three-quarter length pose and a newspaper clipping.
