FRANÇOIS I: (1494-1547) King of France 1515-1547. First King of France from the Angouleme branch. He succeeded his cousin and father-in-law Louis XII. A Patron of the arts who initiated the French Renaissance and attracted Italian artists to France, including Leonardo da Vinci, whose Mona Lisa was bought by King Francis. A rare L.S. 'Francoys', one page, 4to, St-Germain-en-Laye, 17th May [1528], to the President of the Parisian Parliament Jean de Selve, in French. The King requests the expeditious dispatch of the trial of Sieur d'Angerville, Captain of ordinance military regiment, serving him as `..Capitaine de cinquante lances de mes ordonnances´, in order to send him and his regiment promptly to the Kingdom locations where he has ordered to reinstate order and defend. Countersigned by the King's counselor François Robertet de Brou. Addressed to the verso, also bearing a registry annotation. Extremely small filing pinholes to the left border, and small age wear, otherwise VG Jean de Selve (1475-1529) French Diplomat and Magistrate. Appointed in 1520 First President of the Parliament of Paris. De Selve was in charge of important diplomatic missions in England for the negotiation of peace and in Spain for the liberation of King François I. François Robertet de Brou, son of Florimond I de Robertet d'Alluye and godson of François I. He succeeded his father as secretary to the king and bailiff of the palace from 1527. The ordinance companies are the first permanent and professional military units at the disposal of the King. They were created by the ordinance of 26th May 1445 under Charles VII. Essentially composed of cavalry, the basic unit was the ''Lance''.
