A smooth low-wing monoplane with fixed landing gear,
LIBERTY
the Travel Air, designed by Herb Rawdon and Walter
Burnham, reached a maximum speed of 230 m.p.h.
Built in secrecy in Wichita, Kansas by Walter Beech, the
Travel Air was flown to Cleveland, Ohio just before the
1929 National Air Races, immediately placed in a
hangar, and covered with canvas. This secrecy led to
the plane being called the "Mystery Ship.' Flown by
Douglas Davis, the aircraft quickly proved its superiority
