Table with fork bails. Spain, XVII century
Table with so-called fork fasteners. Walnut wood, wrought iron. Spain, XVII century.
Made of walnut wood, carved and turned with four A-shaped legs, two bails and drawers on both fronts (a total of four) decorated with plant-themed carvings. The legs are turned in the type known as "lentil", with different types of discs according to their width, creating a symmetrical composition, and located on and under a simple cylindrical heel. The chambranes are carved with simplified vegetal forms, and the bails are decorated with discs and balustraded forms. The drawers are interspersed with protruding S-shaped pieces and have oval handles, and the sides show simple geometric carvings. Compare, for example, with the 17th century walnut table with discs on the legs in the collections of the Museo de Historia in Madrid; with the Bufete de la Inquisición in the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas in Madrid (in details such as the arrangement of the drawers), or with another 17th century carved drawer dais table with lenticular turned legs in the same museum; another example similar to the one shown here, a Castilian buffet table from the 17th century, preserved in the Museo Casa Natal de Cervantes (Alcalá de Henares, Madrid).
Measurements: 83 x 118 x 73 cm.
