An interesting letter about a marriage proposal for the grandson of Rabbi Shimon Sofer Av Beit Din of Krakow - [1880 approx.]
A letter from R. Mandel, a resident of the city of Kishinev, to the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Sofer, Rabbi of Krakow, author of 'Ktav Sofer', and son of the 'Hatam Sofer'. Regarding the marriage of his grandson (his son-in-law, Rabbi Akiva Kornitzer), with the daughter of Mrs. Sarah Miriam Sheinberg.
The writer says that he knows her well, since he studied with her son, and also "I go in and out every day" in her house.
"And I was called to her house today to find out about about your son-in-law, my dear soul friend Akiva [Kornitzer].... And it turns out that I told them the truth about your respected family and the family of his dear son-in-law, all the details of their ways when I knew."
"This family is the privileged one of the entire country... their ancestors were outstanding rabbis... all the matches they made with geniuses and notable families. Her son is the father-in-law of the rabbi of Lubavitch...".
"Therefore, it would be nice of you to reply as soon as possible... I will also ask you to inform me.... of his commitment and what he demands and requests."
At the end of his letter, he signs: "[זכריה?] מענדל בן הרב מו"ה יצחק דוד ז"ל מעיר מאסט תלמיד הרב מלובאוויטש נ"ע".
Rabbi Akiva Kornitzer (1839-1892) Av Beit Din of Krakow, son in law of Rabbi Shimon Sofer, Av Beit Din of Krakow. married Reizel daughter of his uncle Rabbi Shmon Sofer in 1863.
His daughter Sarah (about whom there is a reference as mentioned at the end of the letter before us) married in 1881 to Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, son of the Rebbe Rabbi Shmuel Schneerson of Lubavitch.

מכתב מעניין על הצעת שידוכין לנכדו של רבי שמעון סופר אב"ד קראקא – [תר"מ בערך]
מכתב מאת ר' מנדל, תושב העיר קישינוב, אל הגאון רבי שמעון סופר אב"ד קראקא, בעל ה'מכתב סופר', ובנו של מרן ה'חתם סופר'. בנידון שידוכי נכדו (בן חתנו רבי עקיבא קורניצר), עם בתה של הגבירה שרה מרים שיינברג.
הכותב מספר כי הוא מכיר אותה היטב, מאחר שלמד עם בנה, וגם "אני נכנס ויוצא בכל יום ממש" בביתה.
"ונקרא נקראתי לביתה כהיום לשאול את פיו על חתן מעכ"ת ה"ה ידיד נפשי היקר והנעלה מו"ה עקיבא [קורניצר] נ"י, כי נכבדות מדובר בה עם בתה הבתולה בת הזקונים אשר לה עבור בן חתנו הנ"ל. ומסתמא סיפרתי אליהם האמת לאמתו משפחת מעכ"ת ומשפחת חתנו היקר כל פרטי אופניהם כאשר ידעתי".
"על כן אשא אל מעכ"ת אופני הבית הזה. המשפחה הזאת היא המיוחסת של כל המדינה... אבותיהם היו רבנים מופלגים... כל השידוכים שעשתה המה עם גאונים ויחוסי ארץ. בנה הוא חותן הרב מליובאווטש...".
"על כן אחלה פני מעכ"ת ימחול להשיב במוקדם... גם אבקשו ימחול להודיעני כמדומה אלי שיש לחתנו היקר הנ"ל בתולה הגיע פרקה להינשא, ימחול להודיעני התחייבותו ומה הוא דורש ומבקש".
בסיום מכתבו הוא חותם: "[זכריה?] מענדל בן הרב מו"ה יצחק דוד ז"ל מעיר מאסט תלמיד הרב מלובאוויטש נ"ע".
רבי עקיבא קורניצר זצ"ל (תקצ"ט-תרנ"ב) אב"ד קראקא, חתנו של רבי שמעון סופר אב"ד קראקא. בשנת תרכ"ג (1863) נישא לרייזל, בת דודו הרב שמעון סופר. בי"ז בטבת תרמ"א.
בתו שרה (שעל אודותיה יש התייחסות כאמור בסוף המכתב שלפנינו) נישאה בשנת תרמ"א לרב מנחם מנדל שניאורסון, בנו של האדמו"ר רבי שמואל שניאורסון מליובאוויטש.
