TABAKSFABRIEK J. GRUNO - WARNING
Porcelain sign / Enamel sign, beaded edges, stenciled, Groningen/NL 1920ies, 53,5 x 78 cm, a rare piece that seems to be a warning note at first sight, but is actually an advertising of a Dutch tabacco manufactury. At the time, the company felt that its trademark was being imitated or misused and used this sign to draw consumers' attention to the unique tobacco quality of its genuine products. The sign was produced for the Dutch overseas colonies in what is now Indonesia and survived there for the last century until it only found its way back to the old continent this year. The enamel quality is still good, slight patina and signs of aging remain to be mentioned.
