David Roberts - Collection of Lithographs - Jerusalem

Ten lithographs depicting sites and views of Jerusalem and environs by David Roberts, all captioned. Plate-signed. They appeared in The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia which was published in London in 1855.

Highlights: Jerusalem as seen from the Mount of Olives, the Gate of Mercy, the Tower of David, Absalom's Tomb, Silwan, Mount Tavor and more.

Roberts [1796-1864] started his career as a backdrop artist and had no formal training in art. He rose to prominence following an eleven month journey to the Middle East in 1838-9 when he drew almost everything he came upon along the way. He returned to London with 272 sketches in his bag. He converted his sketches to lithographs, which were distributed to the general public. For most, this was their first encounter with authentic views of the Land of Israel and the surrounding region. Roberts' works are considered the first and most important of the early 19th century. They supplied the first live depiction of the Land of Israel for European residents who until then were familiar with the Land only through scriptural sources.

Lithographs: 21x15 cm. Leaf: 29x21 cm. The lithographs themselves are in very fine condition, except for stains in the margins of some of them.
