Large collection containing fifteen Torah and personal letters handwritten and signed by the gaon Rabbi Yosef HaLevi. Most of the letters were sent to Rabbi Simchah Bamberger. Two letters were sent to his brother, Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Leib, and another letter was sent to Rabbi Shlomo, av beit din of Brussels. Munich-London, late 19th century (one letter is later). Hebrew with some words in a foreign language.
One letter includes comments on Rabbi Simchah's glosses on Sefer Pekudat HaLevi'im, which was copied by R' Yosef from a manuscript in Munich and printed by Rabbi Simchah with the addition of his own glosses. Two other letters bear handwritten comments by Rabbi Simchah Bamberger.
Some of the letters contain interesting historic and scholarly information. In one letter, R' Yosef writes: "This great city (London) is full of guests asking for bread, and all the persecuted people of Poland come to this country, but the financial gates are locked ..."
