Chumash Vienna. Vienna, 1815, Special Copy for Oaths

The Five Books of the Torah with haphtarot and the five megillot, with explanations of the words in Yiddish. Vienna, 1815. Special copy designated for Jews to take oaths in Court. With the signature of the censor Karl Fischer.

Specifications: 163 [1], 43 leaves. 23 cm.

Unique Features: Special copy designated for swearing in Jewish witnesses in gentile courts. Jews were given special dispensation to take an oath in court on a Jewish Bible. As such, the details were written and signed in the copy before us.

Handwritten inscription and signature in German, Karl Firscher - the censor authorized by the royal court - on the flyleaf. The document was signed in 1824. Historical item, which was for public use.

Background: As was customary at the time, the Jews were commanded to place their hand in the pages of the book, and to point to a specific verse while taking the oath. In the copy before us, there are marks on page 98 in the section of the curses in the portion of Bechukotai.

The Hebraist scholar Karl Fischer [1757-1844] served as a censor on behalf of the Kaiser, and as the royal Hebrew translator and editor. He was a gentile who loved Jews and treated Jews, especially rabbis, with great honor, and was on very good terms with the Av Beit Din of Vienna Rabbi Elazar Flekeles. Karl Fischer also signed on the title pages of the 'Noda B'Yehuda''s books, and even expressed his opinion on the books as fine books. The censor was fluent in Hebrew, and corresponded with Rabbi Elazar Flekeles in this language. In the responsa Teshuva M'Ahava [part one, responsum 26], is a long responsum which Rabbi Elazar Flekeles sent to the censor, regarding Jews taking oaths on a holy book in Christian courts.

Condition: Despite its use, the book is in fine-very fine condition. Slight tear in the margins of the title page. Aging stains. Original scuffed binding.
