August Hermann Fricke was a German artist. He studied at the Munich Art Academy, where he was a master student of the history and genre painter Johann Caspar Herterich. In Munich, he became close to the circles surrounding the magazine "Jugend" and the artists' association "Die Scholle." During his studies, he undertook study trips to Holland and England. He subsequently lived and worked in Munich and moved in established Munich artistic circles. The architect Friedrich von Thiersch summoned him to Wiesbaden, along with Fritz Erler and Adolf Münzer, to paint frescoes for the Kurhaus, which Thiersch had built from 1902 to 1907 on behalf of Kaiser Wilhelm II. From 1906 onwards, he showed paintings in the spring exhibitions of the Munich Secession and in 1913 in the Glass Palace, predominantly figurative paintings but also landscapes. In Bremen, he participated in exhibitions of the German Artists' Association and the Art Association in 1912 and 1913. He likely settled in Bremen during this time. Fricke was severely wounded in World War I. In Bremen, Fricke became a sought-after portraitist. He also made a name for himself as a fresco painter and landscape painter. He moved in the circle around Aline von Kapff and made contacts with artists and architects who provided him with commissions. After the war, he turned to religious themes and painted a series of Resurrection paintings. An early commission was the murals for the church of a retirement home in Tenever. This was followed by the wall frescoes in the chapel of the Egestorff Foundation in Osterholz, the monumental murals for St. Stephen's Church, and in 1926, smaller paintings for the old Hastedt church. Fricke also created designs for murals for the Domgymnasium in Verden. He also painted views of Bremen and motifs from the surrounding area. From 1929 to 1931, he worked as a part-time teacher at the Bremen School of Applied Arts. In 1944, Fricke was commissioned to paint a series of views of the city of Kraków. His last painting, painted in 1948, was Christ on the Mount of Olives. Further artists and styles: religious art, oil painting, print
