From 1919, he studied law (Dr. jur. 1927) and art history in Vienna and Leiden (Netherlands) and attended courses in enamelling at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He was taught painting by Albert Sallak and Hugo Emil Flatz. In 1920 Buchner, who lived in Deutsch-Wagram, founded the Marchfeld Association of Visual Artists. He participated in exhibitions at the Wiener Bruecke and the Vienna Secession. From 1928 to 1932 he was on study trips and was studying at the Rotterdam Academy. Marries Adrienne Alindo. In 1938 Buchner became a member of the Hagenbund. In 1945, when the professional association of Austrian visual artists was re-established in the Vienna Kuenstlerhaus, he was appointed provisional director. His deputies were Franz Lex (painting), Josef Muellner (sculpture), Otto Prutscher (architecture) and Josef Hoffmann (arts and crafts). Buchner was a member of the Vienna Secession from 1945, a member of the Vienna Kuenstlerhaus from 1959 and a member of the lodge Zukunft from 1957. In 1962 he received the title of professor.
