He studied at the Landeskunstschule (later Kunstakademie) with Karl Hubbuch, where he also met his future wife Klara Schindler. He was also a drawing teacher there. As a drawing teacher candidate, he worked in Germsbach, Baden-Baden and Bretten, among other places. After the American captivity in 1945, Koch worked as an art teacher in Bretten and then at the Eichendorff-Gymnasium in Ettlingen until his death (1961). Koch had been married to Klara Schindler, daughter of Theodor Schindler, since 1942. From 1945, the couple lived in the Schindlerhaus in Malsch with their in-laws.
