He undertook study trips to Paris and Italy. Nuremberg (Frankonia, Bavaria) remained the centre of his life and work. The entrance hall of the valve chamber of the elevated tank Haidberg near Nuremberg features a large colour sgraffito by Hertlein from 1959.
