ORLA MUFF* (Kopenhagen 1903 - 1984 Kopenhagen) - ORLA MUFF* (Kopenhagen 1903 - 1984 Kopenhagen) Dancers, around 1930 oil/canvas, 50,5 x 63 cm signed Muff ESTIMATE °€ 800 - 1600 STARTING PRICE °€ 800 Orla Andreas Heinrik Jabobsen was a Danish artist whose paintings, influenced by Art Deco and Cubism, occasionally incorporated ancient subjects. Muff has also worked as a set designer since the 1930s, in Denmark and abroad. From 1917 to 1921 Jacobsen studied in Copenhagen with the leading Danish theatre painter Carl Lund (1855 - 1940). From 1917, he called himself Orla Muff. From 1918 until his death, Muff was also very successful as a postcard designer. After studying with Lund, he travelled to Sweden, Holland, France and Germany. With his elaborate style, he equipped a number of European revue and theatre productions, e.g. at the Folketeatret (People's Theatre) in Copenhagen, for theatre producer Max Reinhardt in Berlin and the Mayol-teatret (Mayol Theatre) in Oslo. He also designed a sheet music binding, e.g. B. for ”Emeralds” by Einar Cronhammer (1923), ”Femina” by Sven Rueno (1923) or ”Han aer Soet och Rar” by Harald Mortensen (1925). Muff's psychologizing oil painting ”Nana” from 1934 combines elements of Art Deco and Expressionism. In 1940, Muff's important oil painting ”Leda and the Swan” was exhibited. Muff also painted “Tropical Jungle Women” that same year. In 1947, Muff published a series of woodcuts based on the fairy tales by Hans Christian Andersen. In 1957, he distinguished himself with a series of Bible illustrations. The Special Collections of the University of West George include Muff's correspondence with Dr. Raymond Piper and a photograph of the artist photographs and of a number of his works.
