He studied art history with Dworák and Strzygowski for four semesters, but was otherwise self-taught. Biel-Bienne had his studio on the Kohlmarkt, and he exhibited illustrations for Gogol and Puschkin in the Hagenbund; In 1936 he organized a collective exhibition in the glass house in the Burggarten (”Human Characters and Passions”), presenting himself as one of the most idiosyncratic of Vienna's younger painters. In 1938 Biel-Bienne emigrated to France and in 1942 to the USA; 1952 professor at Fordham University (New York), 1953-1959 director of the French-American Cultural Institute; from 1959 he taught at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
