In 1961, Israel successfully launched a missile for atmospheric research, designed, built and launched by a team of Israeli scientists and technicians.
When the missile was launched, Israel entered as the seventh member of the small club of countries that launch missiles into the atmosphere.
Obverse: A stylized painting of the earth. From a launching facility in Israel, a rocket rises up and up between the stars of the sky. The inscription: "Derekh Kochav from Ya'akov" in Numbers 24:17. On the rim - translating the address into English.
Reverse: Above, on the right, the State emblem. In the middle of the address area in English "is granted to ...". Free space for stamping the recipient's name. Below is the signature of David Ben-Gurion's hand in Hebrew, and an inscription in English: "David Ben-Gurion, Prime Minister.
Edge: State emblem and the words "State of Israel" in Hebrew and English. The silver medals bear "Silver 935" and "Silver" in English.
