Churchill - The West Part of Barbary
This important engraving is from Awnsham & John Churchill and Thomas Osborne's A Collection of Voyages and Travels, Some now first Printed from Original Manuscripts. It was published between 1704 and 1752 by J. Rowland for Awnsham & John Churchill in London. The engraving is from the a composite of the first, second, and fourth editions of the work. Pages from Churchill's anthology are all from the first edition or the portion that was first printed in the second edition. The parts from the fourth edition will be the supplementary Osborne portion of the work.

Churchill's work was celebrated for its range of illustrations and original accounts. Some of the illustrations in the work pertained to the following voyages: Brawern and Herckemann’s Voyage to Chili in 1642 and 1643; Captain John Monck’s voyage in 1619 and 1620 to Hudson’s Straits, to discover a passage between Greenland and America; Nieuhoff’s voyages to Brazil and the East Indies; John Smith’s travels in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America from the years 1592 to 1629; the life of Columbus by his son; Barbot’s description of North and South Guinea; and an account of the discovery of America from Herrera’s History of the West Indies. "This is a very valuable collection, both for its range of coverage and for the fact that it gives the original accounts." (Hill)

Provenance: Heraldic bookplate of the 5th Earl of Carysfort. Also George Wilbraham as a previous owner.
