The City Without Jews by Hugo Bettauer - A Satirical Novel about Anti-Semitism - Vienna 1926
Hugo Bettauer: Die Stadt Ohne Juden.
R. Lowit Verlag, Wien und Leipzig, 1926.
The novel was written by the author Hugo Bettauer (1872-1925), an Austrian-Jewish author and screenwriter who was eventually murdered by an extreme rightist due to his public opposition to anti-Semitism. This book, an allegorical satire on anti-Semitism, was originally published in 1922 and presents a speculative story in which a fictitious politician expels all the Jews from Vienna. At first the Christian residents are happy about the decree, but eventually change their minds when the economy and culture are damaged, and request the return of the Jews to the city. The book became an instant hit, was made into a movie, and was translated into many languages. However, it was only this year that it was translated into Hebrew for the first time. Half leather binding with illustration.
German, 218 pp., 18X13 cm. Reasonable condition: some wear to the cover, stains, German library stamps.
