A magnificent, impressive and profusely illustrated Holy Land travel book, edited by the author and journalist Aleksey Suvorin and published in Russia at the end of the 19th century. Cover with fancy and elaborate gilded illustration. Christian in its orientation, this important volume includes hundreds of images by the Russian artists Aleksei Kivshenko and Vasiliy Navozov, mostly of Christian holy sites of the Holy Land, as well as images of priests and monks in 19th century Jerusalem. There are also numerous illustrations of the local population, Jews and Arabs, and of Palestine landscapes and sites. Includes a folding, color map of the Holy Land and the region. Russian, 352 pages, 41x30cm. Very good condition. Very slightly fragile pages, some small closed tears, new spine.
