Original Fables - 1763 -One of the First Coloring Books for Children in the World - Fables Originales, Original Fables, John Kidgell, James Robson, London, 1763. Vol. I only Original Fables, compiled by John Kidgell, French alongside English, one of the earliest coloring books for children. The book was privately printed for the Royal Court of the House of Wales, for the benefit of the court children, and in the introduction to this volume there is a dedication to the nanny of the Prince of Wales and his children. The bookseller was the seller of the king's court. Although it is a children's book, the quality of the prose is sophisticated and is considered a world famous parable. In a later edition of the book, in Brussels 1772, the author, Kidgell, wrote in the introduction that it was ”decorated with copper plates which are very suitable for painting.” This book contains 45 copper engravings, only 1 of which is painted. 3 engravings torn or with lacks, the rest in good condition. Very rare, 2 volumes usually sell for around 1000$ or more. Bound in leather binding. Good condition. 16X10 cm.
