רקע: לאחר מרד הזונדרקומנדו ב-7.10.1944, ולאור חששו של הימלר מהתקדמות הצבא האדום לעבר אושוויץ, התקבלה ההחלטה להפסיק את ההשמדה בתאי הגזים ולהערך להעלמת הראיות על פשעי הנאצים במחנה. ההשמדה ההמונית הסתיימה באופן רשמי ב-3 בנובמבר 1944, ונתנה הוראה לפרק את הציוד בתאי הגזים ובמשרפות ולפנותו, לפוצץ את המבנים, להשמיד רכוש נייח ולשרוף את הארכיון המתעד את הפעילות במחנה. רכוש רב הועבר לגרמניה ועשרות אלפי אסירים הוצעדו ב"צעדת מוות" למחנות בתוך גרמניה. בשל החיפזון והבהלה בתהליך הפינוי, נותרו מסמכים רבים שלא הושמדו, ובכללם המסמך שלפנינו, המתעד את ההוראות שנתנו באותו היום הגורלי, בו הוחלט רשמית על שינוי ייעוד המחנה.
