Snuff bottle with a gallant scene. Japanese School. 19th century - Carved bone, polished and decorated with polychrome line drawing. Measures 9 x 5 x 3 cm. A bottle with a cylindrical body and bulbous stopper, ornamented with an erotic scene set against a landscape of trees, rocks, and vegetation. The female figure holds a fan while the male figure lies at her feet, creating an intimate narrative rendered with economy of line and delicate suggestion. Touches of green, pink, and black enliven the ivory surface and enhance the graphic character of the composition. The piece is linked to the 19th-century Japanese tradition of small personal objects, in which sensuality, humor, and miniaturist precision coexisted within formats intended for private use.
