The scene captures the moment of Saint Peter's miraculous liberation from prison: the apostle, chained and partially covered by a red cloak, turns in astonishment toward the angel who bursts in from the left and decisively points the way out, while a soldier remains overcome by sleep in the background. The proximity of the figures and the sharp cropping of their bodies create a compact and dramatic composition, reinforced by the diagonals of arms, chains, and folds. The contrast between the luminous youth of the heavenly messenger, the aging anatomy of the saint, and the darkness enveloping the guard underscores the triumph of divine intervention over earthly captivity; the open chains serve as an explicit sign of salvation. The vigorous brushwork, the foreshortening, the sculptural treatment of the flesh tones, and the intensity of the reds reveal a fully Baroque conception, based on theatrical chiaroscuro and a highly effective gestural expressiveness.
