Bidspirit auction | Buddha head, Ayutthaya Kingdom, 17th
Buddha head, Ayutthaya Kingdom, 17th century - Lacquered and gilded sandstone. Measures 57 cm in height. Buddha head with an introspective expression and idealized features, with half-closed eyes that encourage inner contemplation, a straight nose, and gently defined lips in a serene pose. The hair is arranged in small, regular spirals crowned by a prominent ushnisha, a symbol of spiritual knowledge. The neck displays the traditional three folds of beauty characteristic of Southeast Asian Buddhist iconography. Traces of gilding and black lacquer partially cover the surface, creating an intense material contrast that accentuates the sacred nature of the image. The sculpture manifests the refined spirituality of Ayutthaya art, where anatomical idealization and linear elegance sought to convey inner balance and transcendence. The monumentality of the bust and the nobility of the carving make the work an outstanding example of Thai Buddhist devotion. 57 cm in height.
