Buddha head, Burmese School of Pagan, 16th century - Beige sandstone lacquered in reddish-ochre tones. Measures 47 cm, 57 cm with base. Buddha head with a serene expression and youthful features, conceived with an extraordinary formal synthesis characteristic of Burmese art from the Pagan kingdom. The face displays half-closed eyes and a barely suggested smile, conveying a profound sense of inner calm and spirituality. The prominent ushnisha, surmounted by a pear-shaped rasmi, symbolizes enlightenment and transcendent knowledge. The softly modeled surfaces and warm ochre polychromy accentuate the silent monumentality of the piece, while the elongated ears and the geometric refinement of the face allude to the aesthetic ideals of Southeast Asian Buddhism.
