HISPANIC AMERICAN COLONIAL SCHOOL, PROBABLY MEXICO, 17TH-18TH CENTURIES - Praying Virgin - Carved, polychromed, and gilded wood. Dimensions: 58 x 22 x 15 cm. Sculpture in the round representing the Virgin Mary in a praying and intercessory pose. The figure stands on a molded base, wearing a wide tunic and mantle with traces of polychromy in shades of blue, green, red, and gold. The delicate modeling of the face, the arrangement of the folds, and the elegant gesture of the hands reflect styles popularized by Hispanic religious imagery during the 17th and 18th centuries. The work retains a considerable portion of its original polychromy, with gilding and brocade visible in various areas of the garment. The composition has a distinctly devotional character, intended for private veneration or as part of an altarpiece.
