Throwing knife-coin. Matakan village, Nigeria. 19th–20th century - Iron. Dimensions: 81 × 26 cm. Wrought iron object combining the form of a throwing knife with the function of traditional currency, used within the economic and ritual systems of the Matakan people. These pieces served as a medium of exchange, a symbol of value and status, as well as possessing ceremonial significance. The complexity of the silhouette and the solidity of the forging reflect both its social importance and the high level of technical skill in traditional West African metallurgy.
