Kholuka (N'Khanda) initiation mask, Yaka people, Democratic Republic of the Congo, 20th century - Braided cane, organic materials, and natural pigments. Dimensions: 60 × 25 × 22 cm. Impressive Kholuka male initiation mask, used during the N'Khanda ceremonies of the Yaka people. The mask is distinguished by its characteristic latticework teeth, round, bulging eyes, and large, bulbous nose—elements that symbolize the spiritual power and ritual transformation of the initiate. These masks were worn by elders during rites of passage, where young men acquired the knowledge necessary to fully integrate into the community. The colors and volumes express life force (nyama) and the connection to the ancestors. A remarkable example of Yaka sculptural art, with great presence and expressiveness.
