An idealized landscape structured around a single-arched bridge crowned by a cylindrical tower, with a waterfall in the foreground, figures of travelers above, and fishermen or figures by the water below. The composition combines broad masses of shadow with a luminous opening of clear sky that establishes depth and guides the eye toward the distant horizon. The treatment of the water, the rock formations, and the trees bent by the wind accentuates the poetic and theatrical character of the whole. The work belongs to the tradition of the Italianate, fantastical landscape, heir to Baroque classicism and the capriccio painting of the 18th century.
