Bidspirit Auktion | Monolithic sculpture of celadon jadeite,
Monolithic sculpture of celadon jadeite, China, Qing dynasty, 19th century - Monolithic sculpture of translucent celadon jadeite (ranging from pale green to milky white), depicting a monkey seated in a dynamic pose, with flexed legs and one raised hand holding a longevity peach, of a deeper emerald hue, on its left shoulder and above its head. The expressive face features a prominent snout, eyes inlaid with black substances, a curled tail, and finely crafted anatomical details: ears, fingers, and stylized hair. The monkey (hou) holding the longevity peach alludes, according to the original, to the Chinese pun ”ma souai” (”to arrive soon”), a symbol of immortality and longevity, a popular motif in jade sculptures since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Translucent celadon jade, polished to a silky sheen, with no visible cracks or chips and slight natural black inclusions. China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century. Height: 7 cm. Batch in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipment: no import duties apply within the EU. An export permit from the country of origin may be required.
