Indo-Portuguese Cabinet with Marquetry Decoration and Zoomorphic Supports, Portuguese India, 17th Century - Teak wood with ebony and bone marquetry, metal fittings and carving. Measurements: 123 x 88 x 46 cm. Indo-Portuguese cabinet of architectural construction, composed of an upper section with numerous drawers and an open lower stand, conceived as a richly ornamented piece with pronounced sculptural presence. The façade is arranged in horizontal tiers of rectangular drawers, each framed by dark mouldings, metal studs and delicate stylised vegetal scrolls, enhanced by pale inlays that create a strong contrast against the warm reddish tone of the wood. The pierced escutcheons and handles, designed with symmetrical arabesque patterns, introduce a refined metallic accent and emphasise the precision of the decorative workmanship. The lower section contains two broad compartments with rounded arches, separated by a central support, while the outer sides rest upon two bird-shaped zoomorphic protomes, vigorously carved so that the structural supports become fully sculptural elements. The interplay of polished surfaces, marquetry, metalwork and carving creates a complex and sumptuous visual texture, combining European ornamental vocabularies with forms, materials and techniques characteristic of workshops in Portuguese India. The piece reflects the intense artistic and commercial exchange between Portugal and the Indian subcontinent during the 16th and 17th Centuries, visible in the fusion of the European cabinet type with local inlay techniques, a taste for symmetry, profuse decoration and vegetal and animal motifs.
