Italian paliotto in embossed and punched silver with effigy of clippings, Italy, 17th century
Embossed and punched silver. Dimensions: 90 x 206 cm. This extraordinary 17th-century altar panel, known as the "Paliotto", is a remarkable example of Italian ecclesiastical art. Finely crafted in worked silver and silver-gilt, it features exquisite Renaissance-style detailing, including intricate rocaille motifs, cherubs, floral decorations and biblical scenes. The work, made of silver applied to a wooden panel, reflects the exceptional mastery of the craftsmen of the time.
