French School of the 18th Century - Alleged portrait of Mademoiselle de Nantes
Oil on canvas. Measurements: 89 x 77 cm. Portrait of Louise Françoise de Bourbon, known as Mademoiselle de Nantes, born in Tournai on 1 June 1673. The legitimised daughter of King Louis XIV and Madame de Montespan, she was a French princess, Duchess of Bourbon and later Princess of Condé. She was the wife of Louis III de Bourbon-Condé, grandson of the great Condé. In this portrait, she is depicted wearing a cinnamon-coloured dress embroidered in blue, with the sleeve adorned with a precious stone brooch. Over her shoulders she wears a matching blue cloak, edged in gold. Her hair, gathered up and decorated with a red bow, is styled "à la Fontange", very popular during the reign of Louis XIV.
