Attributed to the MASTER OF PALANQUINOS (Leonese school of the 15th century) - Saint Catherine of Alexandria
Tempera on panel with punched gilding applied to the mixtion. Measurements: 50 x 27 cm (without frame), 56 x 38 cm (with frame). The style of the Master of Palanquinos shows Flemish and Fernando Gallego influences, with Mudejar patterns on gilded backgrounds decorated with abstract floral motifs, similar to those of the Assumption in the Church Museum of Oviedo. The distinctive features of his figures are also noteworthy: oval eyes, a clear forehead, thin lips and slender hands with long, fragile fingers, as described by Javier González Santos in his 1998 study. The Master of Palanquinos was a painter active in León in the last quarter of the 15th century, named thus by Gómez Moreno in 1908. His work was identified from six panels from the parish of Palanquinos, which now form part of the altarpiece of the cathedral of León along with others by Nicolás Francés. Since then, scholars such as Chandler Post have added new works to its catalogue, such as altarpieces in San Juan Bautista (Villalón de Campos), Santa Marina (Masaveu collection), and Santa María de Arbás in Mayorga del Campo.
