17th Century Colonial School - Reliquary with four relics and floral motifs
Carved and polychrome wood with gold and silver leaf details. Dimensions 82 × 50 × 9 cm. This 17th-century colonial reliquary, used to contain sacred relics, is a masterpiece of goldsmithing and cabinetmaking of the period. The piece, trapezoidal in shape and decorated with floral motifs and baroque architectural elements, reflects the dynamism and decorative exuberance typical of this style. The relics, contained in small glass urns, are the center of the composition, symbolizing the connection between the earthly and the divine. Floral motifs, such as roses and lilies, reinforce the symbolism of purity and resurrection, while architectural elements lend monumentality and solemnity to the work. This reliquary is a testament to the rich artistic tradition of colonial America and its deep spirituality.
