Spanish School of the 18th Century - Santo Domingo
Carved, polychrome and gilded wood. Dimensions: 75 x 32 x 20 cm. We can see Saint Dominic in a round figure, although his back was not carved, as he was intended to be seen only from the front, possibly on an altarpiece. The habit has been sculpted with realism, while the head of the saint, with monastic tonsure, shows a kind and serene expression. In one hand he holds the open Scriptures, and at his feet there is a dog that alludes to an omen of his birth: his mother, Juana de Aza, dreamed of a child with a star on his forehead, accompanied by a black and white dog that carried a lit torch in its mouth.
