Follower of Bernardo Strozzi (1581-1644) - Christ in Emmaus
Oil on canvas, 55 x 75 cm (unframed), 71 x 90 cm (framed). The painting depicts Jesus sharing bread with the pilgrims of Emmaus, who are seated at his table. These characters, also called the disciples of Emmaus, appear in the New Testament, specifically in the Gospel according to Saint Luke (chapter 24, verses 13 to 35). One of them is identified as Cleophas, while the name of the other remains unknown. This work, probably kept in the Kingdom of Veneto until the 19th century, bears on the reverse a seal with the emblem of the Hohenzollerns, who ruled the kingdom until 1866. This seal bears the inscription "... ESPORTATIONE ... R.ACCADEMIA.DI.MILANO", which confirms the authorization of the Venetian authorities of the time for its export.
