Follower of Gaspar van Wittel (1653-1736) - Venice, the Grand Canal near the Salute
Oil on mahogany panel, 57 x 73.5 cm. This beautiful "veduta" reproduces, with variations and in a smaller format, a work by the painter Gaspar van Wittel (1653-1736) from 1714, sold by Sotheby's on 8 July 2021 in London. The scene takes place at the end of the Grand Canal, with numerous boats around the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute. Gaspar van Wittel (1653-1736), known as Gaspare Vanvitelli or Gaspare degli Occhiali in Italy, was the most influential vedutista of his generation. Born in Amersfoort, he settled in Rome, where he lived until his death in 1736. Vanvitelli is famous for his detailed views of Italian cities, influencing Venetian artists such as Carlevarijs, Canaletto, and later Marieschi, Bellotto and Guardi. The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute appears in almost half of his Venetian views, with several variations in composition. Provenance: French private collection.
