Circle of Jacques Stella (1596-1657) - Martyrdom of Saint Stephen c.1650, 17th century roman school
An exceptional 17th-century work: an oil on amethyst painting depicting the martyrdom of St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr. The painting masterfully captures the moment when St. Stephen is stoned to death after being condemned for his teachings, which provoked hostility from several synagogues in Jerusalem. The use of an amethyst slab as a support provides a unique luminosity and depth, cleverly symbolising the stones that fall on him during his execution. Framed in ebonised wood with lapis lazuli inlays and silver details, the piece stands out for its elegance and historical value. This work not only reflects the dramatic essence of martyrdom, but also the high esteem in which St. Stephen was held in the early Christian community. In excellent condition, although it may show slight signs of use, it is a valuable addition for collectors of religious art and lovers of art history. Its standard weight is between 40 kg and 80 kg. Measurements: 30 cm high x 1 cm thick x 20 cm wide.
