Star Lot - Monumental colonial carving of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, Mexican New Spanish colonial school of the 17th century, Viceroyalty of New Spain
No reserve lot. In carved wood, partially gilt and profusely dotted. With a loving and merciful gesture, this wonderful representation before which we find ourselves rigorously reproduces the figure of the Santa Rosa de Mayo given to the Indian Saint Juan Diego, venerated throughout Mexico and the rest of Christianity, the Virgin of Guadapupe that we present, wears a finely carved sky blue cloak, studded with golden stars with gold leaf, and masterfully stewed petticoats with polychrome floral motifs on the surface and an exquisite work of dotting in gold on the edges, at the base we can see an Indian Juan Diego next to the crescent, at his feet. Delicately carved in polychrome and stewed wood, whose crown is in original gilded wood. Works in relation: a similar example, of similar dating but lower quality and detail than the one presented in our salerooms, preserved in the Museo Amparo, Mexico, registration number: VS.ES.031. Measurements: 85.5 x 40 x 17 cm with built-in base. Origin: important private collection, Spain.
